Before you file with an Arkansas company or sign a contract with one, you need two facts: the name you want is available, and the business you are dealing with is real and in good standing. The free Arkansas Business Entity Search, run by the Secretary of State (SOS), settles both in minutes.
The search returns an entity’s status, type, formation date, registered agent, addresses, and filing history. It does not return ownership. This guide shows how to run it, how to read the results, and what to do next.
What Is the Arkansas Business Entity Search?
The Arkansas Business Entity Search is a free, public database run by the SOS Business & Commercial Services (BCS) division, covering every entity registered or transacting business in the state. It has two entry points: the Business Entity Search for existing companies, and the separate Business Entity Name Search for checking a name before you file. It covers limited liability companies (LLCs), corporations, nonprofits, and limited partnerships (LPs).
The SOS BCS hub lists both tools by name, so the “check my name” flow and the “look up a company” flow start in different places.

How Do You Perform an Arkansas Business Entity Search?
Go to the SOS Business Entity Search, pick a search method, enter your term, and submit. The long-standing sos.arkansas.gov/corps/search_all.php link now returns an HTTP 302 redirect to sos-corp-search.ark.org/corps, per an SOS-verified check in July 2026. You can search four ways.
| Search method | When to use it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Entity name | Looking up a company by full or partial name | Arkansas SOS |
| Fictitious name (DBA, “doing business as”) | The company trades under a name other than its legal name | Arkansas SOS |
| Registered agent name | Finding entities tied to a known agent | Arkansas SOS |
| Filing number (state file number) | You already have the SOS-assigned number | Arkansas SOS |
Tip: for a name search, use the “contains” option rather than “starts with.” A “contains” match surfaces variations you would otherwise miss.
How Do You Check If a Business Name Is Taken in Arkansas?
Run your proposed name through the Business Entity Name Search. No match, plus a name that meets Arkansas naming rules, means the name is likely available. Arkansas uses a “distinguishable” standard, and every legal name must carry an entity designator. State approval covers SOS filings only, not federal trademarks.
Act 256 of 2023 moved Arkansas from a “confusingly similar” test to a “distinguishable” one, per the Act 256 text. Under that standard, differences limited to a suffix, an article, “and” versus “&”, singular or plural form, or punctuation do not make a name distinguishable, per the SOS Name Availability Guidelines. Adding or swapping a designator like LLC or Inc. does not distinguish an otherwise identical name either.
| Entity type | Required name designator | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Corporation | “Corporation,” “Incorporated,” “Company,” or “Limited” (or Corp., Inc., Co., Ltd.) | Ark. Code Ann. § 4-27-401 |
| LLC | “Limited Liability Company,” “Limited Company,” or L.L.C., LLC, L.C., LC | Ark. Code Ann. § 4-38-112 |
| Limited partnership (LP) | “limited partnership,” “L.P.,” or “LP” | Doing Business in Arkansas 2025 (SOS) |
A legal entity name, a fictitious name (DBA), and a trademark are three separate things. A corporation must file its fictitious name with the SOS, and a domestic corporation also files with the county clerk, per the SOS Business Services FAQ. State name approval “does not grant the right to use that name” against someone else’s trademark, per the SOS Name Availability Guidelines, which tells applicants to check the USPTO separately. You can pre-clear a name with Commenda’s company name checker before you file.

What Information Do Arkansas Entity Search Results Show?
Results show the legal name, filing number, status, entity type, formation date, registered agent, principal address, and filing history. They do not show owners or shareholders. The SOS record keeps addresses only, not the people behind the entity.

What Do Arkansas Business Entity Status Labels Mean?
Status tells you whether an entity is compliant, lapsed, or closed. Good Standing means current on obligations. Forfeited, Dissolved, and Revoked all mean the entity has lost or ended its authority. Read the label before you rely on any Arkansas company.
| Status | Meaning | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Standing / Active | Current on franchise tax and filings | Nothing; order a certificate if a lender asks | Arkansas SOS |
| Inactive | Not operating or missing filings | File the outstanding reports | Arkansas SOS |
| Forfeited | Standing lost, usually for unpaid franchise tax | Pay back tax and file to reinstate | Arkansas SOS BCS |
| Dissolved | Voluntarily or administratively closed | Reinstate if administrative, or form anew | Arkansas SOS |
| Revoked | Authority withdrawn by the state | Resolve the compliance cause with the SOS | Arkansas SOS |
Why Do Arkansas Businesses Show as Forfeited?
Forfeiture almost always follows an unpaid franchise tax or an unfiled annual franchise tax report, both filed with the SOS. Arkansas requires most entities to file that report every year. Miss it, and the SOS forfeits the entity’s standing. Reinstatement means paying the back franchise tax and filing the missing report.
Confirm current amounts and due dates on the SOS franchise tax pages before you pay; they vary by entity type. Commenda’s compliance calendar tracks the annual franchise tax deadline so an entity never slips into forfeited status by accident.
How Do You Search for an Arkansas LLC, Corporation, or Nonprofit?
One tool covers every registered type. Search by name, then read the entity-type field to confirm you have an LLC, a corporation, a nonprofit, an LP, or a limited liability partnership (LLP). Sole proprietorships and general partnerships without a state filing do not appear, because they never register with the SOS.
That single scope is why the entity search doubles as a nonprofit lookup and a corporation lookup. The type field, not a separate database, tells the structures apart.
How Do You Get an Arkansas Certificate of Good Standing?
Order it from the SOS after the search confirms Good Standing status. The certificate is an official document proving the entity exists and is current on its filings. Banks, lenders, and other states’ foreign-registration offices routinely demand one before they open accounts or approve deals.
The free search shows status. The certificate is the paid, signed proof of it. Confirm the current fee on the SOS BCS fee schedule when you order.
What Is a Registered Agent in Arkansas?
A registered agent is the person or company designated to receive service of process and official notices for an entity. Every registered Arkansas LLC, corporation, and LP must name one, and the entity search displays the agent’s name and address. An entity with no valid agent is a compliance red flag.
How Do You Verify an Arkansas Business for Due Diligence?
Check the entity’s status, formation date, registered agent, and filing history before you sign a contract or send money. A Good Standing entity with a consistent filing record is a green light. A Forfeited or Revoked counterparty, or one with no current registered agent, is a red flag worth a direct conversation.
Pull the filing history to confirm the company has kept up annual reports. A recent gap often signals the trouble that leads to forfeiture.
What Should You Do After Your Arkansas Entity Search?
Reserve the name, file your formation documents, get a federal tax ID, clear trademarks, and calendar your franchise tax report. Each step follows directly from a clean search result.
- Reserve the available name (120 days for corporations, per the SOS).
- File Articles of Organization for an LLC or Articles of Incorporation for a corporation. See Commenda’s guide to registering a business in Arkansas.
- Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
- Clear your brand at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), since the SOS search covers state filings only.
- Calendar the annual franchise tax report and, if you need one, an Arkansas business license.
