VAT ID Verification: Verify Sweden Tax Registration Number

Sam Suechting

An invalid supplier VAT (Value Added Tax) number costs you the input VAT deduction and can trigger penalties. Skatteverket, Sweden’s tax agency, expects you to invoice against a valid, active number. VAT ID verification is the check that protects the deduction and screens the supplier before money moves.

This guide covers the correct format of a Swedish tax registration number, the free official ways to check one, the penalties for getting it wrong, and what to do when a number fails validation. Skatteverket instructs businesses to use only the European Commission’s VIES service for these checks, per its official guidance.

What Is a Swedish VAT Number (Momsregistreringsnummer)?

A Swedish VAT number is the Momsregistreringsnummer (VAT registration number) that Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) issues to businesses registered for moms (the Swedish word for VAT). It is built from the company’s Organisationsnummer (organization number). It appears on invoices, VAT returns, and intra-EU (European Union) filings. It is the transaction identifier, not the registration certificate.

The Organisationsnummer identifies the legal entity itself. The VAT number is derived from it and used specifically for VAT purposes. A separate tax registration certificate proves enrollment and carries fuller business details, covered in FAQ 1 below.

What Is the Swedish VAT Number Format?

A Swedish VAT number is the country code `SE` plus the 10-digit Organisationsnummer plus a fixed `01` suffix, giving `SE` plus 12 digits, per Skatteverket. The last two digits are always `01`. Using an illustrative Organisationsnummer of `556677-8899`, the VAT number is `SE556677889901`.

Digits 11–12Fixed suffix `01`Skatteverket
Full VAT number`SE556677889901` (illustrative structure only)Skatteverket

The Organisationsnummer is 10 digits in the format `NNNNNN-NNNN`. Its third digit is always 2 or higher to distinguish it from a personnummer (personal identity number), and its tenth digit is a Luhn check digit, per the Skatteverket SKV 709 specification. It does not encode a date. Sole traders (enskild firma) use their personnummer as the org number base.

Skatteverket notes the legal form cannot always be read reliably from the number alone; the registry tracks it separately, per SKV 709. The check digit follows the Luhn algorithm from US Patent 2,950,048, granted to Hans P. Luhn in 1960.

How Do You Verify a Swedish VAT Number Online?

Use the European Commission’s free VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) tool at ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies. VIES queries EU member states’ national databases in real time, including Skatteverket’s, and confirms whether a number is currently valid. For confirmed Swedish numbers it returns the registered name and address, per the European Commission.

How Do You Check a Swedish VAT Number on VIES?

Open the VIES portal, pick Sweden, enter the number, and read the result. VIES returns valid or invalid plus the Swedish business name and address. Enter your own VAT number as the requester to obtain a consultation number, which serves as point-in-time proof of verification for your audit trail.

Select Sweden
  1. Go to the VIES VAT number validation tool.
  2. Select “SE-Sweden” as the Member State.
  3. Enter the 12 digits of the Swedish VAT number.
  4. Enter your own VAT number in the requester field to generate a consultation number.
  5. Click Verify and read the result: valid or invalid, plus name and address.
  6. Record the consultation number as dated proof of the check.

Can You Verify Directly With Skatteverket?

Yes. Skatteverket administers all domestic VAT registration and validation in Sweden. Contact Skatteverket when a number is valid domestically but not returned by VIES, when VIES reports its service unavailable, or when you need to confirm a domestic-only registration. Skatteverket is the authoritative fallback whenever VIES coverage is limited.

Why Should You Verify a Swedish VAT Number Before Invoicing?

Verification protects your input VAT deduction, supports zero-rating on intra-EU B2B (business-to-business) supplies, and screens suppliers for fraud. An invalid customer VAT number can invalidate zero-rating and leave you liable for the VAT. A valid supplier number keeps your deduction defensible if Skatteverket audits the invoice.

Treat verification as ongoing due diligence, not a one-time step. Re-check numbers quarterly and before large payments, because a supplier can deregister, suspend, or change details between transactions. Recording the VIES consultation number each time gives you a dated record of the status at the moment you relied on it.

What Penalties Apply for Invalid Swedish VAT Numbers?

Skatteverket charges a late-filing fee (förseningsavgift) and can add a tax surcharge (skattetillägg) when a return understates VAT. Interest (kostnadsränta) accrues on unpaid tax at a base rate, not a flat monthly percentage. The table below lists current figures verified against Skatteverket, in Swedish krona (SEK).

The 20% skattetillägg is applied on an objective basis under the Skatteförfarandelagen (2011:1244); no intent is required, though excusable errors can qualify for relief.

What Are Sweden’s VAT Rates and Registration Threshold?

Sweden applies a 25% standard rate, reduced rates of 12% and 6%, and 0% on certain supplies, per Skatteverket. Businesses must register for VAT once annual turnover exceeds SEK 120,000, the threshold in force since 1 January 2025. That threshold rose from SEK 80,000 and aligns with the EU SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) VAT scheme that also launched in January 2025.

What If a Swedish VAT Number Fails Validation?

Most failures are typos, activation lag, domestic-only registration, or VIES downtime. Check the number character by character first, then confirm the registration type, then retry if VIES itself is down. The table below maps each error to its cause, fix, and where to escalate.

Error or resultLikely causeFixEscalate to

VIES validates numbers registered for intra-EU trade. A newly issued number can take a short period to appear as active, so re-check rather than assume it is invalid. When a domestic-only number will not resolve on VIES, Skatteverket is the authoritative source.

How Can You Automate Swedish VAT Number Validation?

Manual VIES lookups do not scale past a handful of suppliers. Bulk validation via CSV (comma-separated values) upload or API (application programming interface) keeps your entire supplier file continuously verified and flags status changes before they cost you a deduction. Automation also retains the consultation numbers you need for an audit trail.

Commenda’s indirect tax software validates Swedish VAT numbers in bulk, monitors supplier status over time, and records dated proof of each check. It connects to your invoicing and finance stack through 100+ ERP (enterprise resource planning), API, and custom integrations, so verification runs where your supplier data already lives.
