Sales tax and VAT software for Puzzle
Puzzle keeps the ledger and closes the month. It does not calculate sales tax, watch a state threshold, or file a return, and its own accountant directory lists Commenda as the one firm handling indirect tax. We read the same books and cover all of it, across all 50 states and 70+ countries.
Trusted by global businesses
Puzzle invoices have no tax line
Puzzle documents five invoice fields: customer, invoice ID, dates, line items and a memo. None of them is tax. Commenda holds the rate for each jurisdiction and applies it per transaction.
Know about a threshold before you cross it
Puzzle does not track nexus. Its help centre returns no articles for the word. Commenda measures your Puzzle revenue against thresholds in all 50 states and 70+ countries and tells you at 80%.
We register and file, in every country
Puzzle's answer to indirect tax is its accountant directory, where Commenda is the only firm under Indirect Tax. We register and file across all 50 states and 70+ countries.
Coverage comparison
What Puzzle handles, and what it leaves to you
Puzzle is a general ledger, so most rows below are a statement about what a ledger is rather than a gap in the product. Its figures come from Puzzle's own invoice documentation, import documentation, tax documents guide, and integrations page, checked on September 16, 2026.

Calculate tax on what you bill in Puzzle
Puzzle records tax. It does not work it out. Its CSV importer offers sales tax as an example account you can code a line to, which is where the amount lands once you have it. Commenda produces that amount. We hold the rate for each jurisdiction, apply it per transaction, and keep the source of every figure.

Track your global exposure from Puzzle
A ledger tells you what you billed. It does not tell you which state that billing just created an obligation in. Commenda measures the same revenue against economic thresholds in all 50 states and 70+ countries and tells you at 80%, before you cross. A short questionnaire covers physical presence too, because an office or a remote employee never shows up on an invoice.

Register and file everywhere you owe
Puzzle lists state registrations and indirect tax as categories for finding an accounting firm, not as things the product does. Commenda registers you in all 50 states, across EU VAT including OSS and IOSS, and for GST in APAC and Canada, then builds the return and files it on each jurisdiction's required frequency, with amendments where a period needs correcting.

Manage your customers and exemptions in one place
The only mention of an exemption certificate anywhere on Puzzle's site is in its own terms, about certificates customers give Puzzle. Commenda holds a verified tax ID on the customer record with the system it came from. Certificates work the same way. Your customers upload through a portal, each one is validated on upload, and it applies automatically where it is valid.

Consolidation
What Puzzle leaves for you to do
Puzzle is built to close the books. Indirect tax is a different job. It needs a rate for each jurisdiction, a threshold counted across every sales channel, and a return filed on each state and country schedule. Commenda does that work on top of your Puzzle data.
Puzzle sends indirect tax to an outside firm
Puzzle's accountant directory has an Indirect Tax category, and Commenda is the only firm in it. Its pricing page says the same thing in words: Puzzle automates the day to day, and vetted partners handle bookkeeping, tax prep and the rest. We already work together on the accounting side, and Puzzle has published how that works.
Puzzle does not tag revenue by state
Puzzle pulls from Stripe, PayPal, Brex, Ramp, Mercury and 400+ banks through Plaid. None of that revenue arrives tagged by ship-to state, because the books do not need it. A state threshold does. Commenda reads the same revenue and tags it, so you get one number per state.
Billing in dollars does not make you a US-only seller
Puzzle's import documentation says non-USD currencies cannot currently be processed, and multi-entity consolidation runs through a third party on its Core tier and above. You can bill every customer in dollars and still owe VAT where the customer sits. Registration thresholds abroad turn on where you sell, not on the currency you invoice in.
One number per state, whatever it came through
Puzzle is one of 100+ systems Commenda reads, and each transaction keeps its origin, its product tax code, and any tax already collected. A marketplace sale that was never yours to tax stays separate from a direct invoice that needs it. You get one exposure figure per state and one return per period.
What it covers
What Puzzle covers, in its own documentation
Every row below is Puzzle stating what its product does. Two are easy to misread. Sales tax exists in Puzzle as an account you can code an amount to, not a figure it calculates. And the tax package is a corporate income tax pack, not a sales tax return.
| What you need | What Puzzle provides | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A tax line on the invoice | Not in the documented fields. Puzzle's invoice guide lists the customer, invoice ID, invoice date, due date, line items and a memo. No tax field is documented | Puzzle help centre |
| A way to record tax you calculated elsewhere | Available. Puzzle's CSV import template gives sales tax as an example general ledger account for a line item, so the amount can be coded once you have it | Puzzle help centre |
| A rate for the jurisdiction you just sold into | You. Puzzle publishes no jurisdiction rate tables and no tax determination. Its product menu is AI Close, accrual automation, invoicing, integrations, revenue recognition, the API, and accuracy | Puzzle |
| To know when you crossed a state threshold | Not available. Puzzle's help centre returns no articles for nexus, and nexus monitoring appears nowhere in its product pages | Puzzle help centre |
| A tax engine connected to the ledger | Not on the integrations page. Puzzle groups its integrations into banking, cards and expenses, revenue, payroll and HR, planning and analytics, and other tools. There is no tax category | Puzzle integrations |
| Indirect tax actually handled | A firm from Puzzle's accountant directory. Commenda is the only firm listed under its Indirect Tax category | Puzzle accountant directory |
| Billing in a currency other than US dollars | Not yet. Puzzle's invoice import documentation states that non-USD currencies cannot currently be processed, and assumes USD where the field is blank | Puzzle help centre |
| What the tax package actually covers | Corporate income tax. Puzzle describes it as the information you or your tax accountant need to file the company's taxes once the books are closed for the year | Puzzle help centre |
| Consolidation across several entities | A third party. Puzzle states that multi-entity consolidation is available on its Core tier and above, through an integration with Joiin | Puzzle pricing |

“The platform works exactly the way I need it to. I have one team member who manages all of our exemption certificates, and that functionality has been particularly efficient for us. It allows him to handle everything seamlessly, making the handoff significantly easier.”

Frequently asked questions
No, and it does not claim to. Puzzle's invoice guide documents the customer, the invoice ID, the invoice date, the due date, line items and a memo. There is no tax field, and its invoicing product page does not use the word tax. What Puzzle does give you is somewhere to record the tax once it exists: its CSV import template lists sales tax as an example general ledger account for a line item. That is the split in a sentence. Puzzle keeps the book, and the rate, the taxability decision and the return come from a tax platform. Commenda holds the rate per jurisdiction, applies it per transaction, and keeps the source of every figure.
No. Puzzle's Tax Package is a corporate income tax pack. Its help centre describes it as the information you or your tax accountant need to file the company's taxes once the books are closed for the tax year, and the underlying report is a tax package trial balance. That is the annual income tax return, a different regime with different deadlines from sales tax and VAT. A sales tax return is filed per state, on that state's frequency, from transaction data tagged by ship-to location. Commenda builds and files those separately, across all 50 states and 70+ countries.
Not through Puzzle. Its integrations page groups everything into banking, cards and expenses, revenue, payroll and HR, planning and analytics, and other tools, and there is no tax category. Its help centre returns no articles for Avalara and none for Anrok. Whatever you use for tax sits alongside Puzzle rather than inside it, which means the exposure figure and the ledger are two systems that have to agree. Commenda reads the revenue directly, so there is one number rather than two to reconcile.
Possibly, yes. Registration thresholds abroad turn on where your customer sits, not on the currency you invoice in. An EU customer buying a digital service from you can create a VAT obligation whether you billed in euros or in dollars, and the EU's One Stop Shop exists so you file that in one place rather than 27. This matters on Puzzle specifically because its import documentation states that non-USD currencies cannot currently be processed, so a dollar-only ledger can look domestic while the obligations are not. Commenda registers and files VAT across the EU including OSS and IOSS.
Puzzle published it. When a client onboards to Commenda they are added to Puzzle in a white-label setup, and they never log into Puzzle directly. The cash flow statement, the balance sheet and the profit and loss pull from Puzzle into the Commenda dashboard, so you connect your tools once and read the result in one place. Commenda's accounting team works in Puzzle for clients who want the books handled. Clients who already run Puzzle themselves keep doing that, and we read the ledger rather than own it.
Usually on Puzzle. For new or small entities we set you up on a bookkeeping tool with bank and payment integrations, so you get clean books without buying a heavyweight ERP first. Commenda's indirect tax work runs from that ledger from day one, which means your nexus tracking starts at the first invoice rather than after the first threshold. As you scale, the books can migrate to QuickBooks, NetSuite or Xero without the tax setup being rebuilt.
No. Puzzle's help centre returns no articles for nexus, and threshold monitoring appears in none of its product pages, which is expected of a general ledger. The gap matters because sales tax liability starts on the day you cross, not on the day you notice. Commenda measures your revenue against economic thresholds in all 50 states and notifies you at 80% of a registration threshold, so the registration can go in while you are still under it. A questionnaire covers physical presence as well, because an office or one remote employee creates an obligation with no revenue threshold to cross first.
Custom integration support for your business
Puzzle setups differ in what feeds them. Some teams bill through Stripe, some raise invoices in Puzzle directly, some arrive with a year of history already in the ledger. Tell us how yours works and we will build the integration around it.
