The City of Fresno charges a combined sales and use tax rate of 8.35% as of July 2026. That number stacks California’s statewide base on top of Fresno County and City of Fresno district taxes. Here is the verified breakdown, the county-versus-city difference, and what you collect and file.

What Is the Sales Tax Rate in Fresno City, California?

The combined sales and use tax rate in the City of Fresno is 8.35%, effective July 1, 2026, according to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). Rates change, so confirm the live figure for any address with the CDTFA sales and use tax rate lookup before you collect. CDTFA is the authoritative source for California rates.

How Does the Fresno Sales Tax Break Down by State, County, and City?

Fresno’s 8.35% rate is the state base plus voter-approved district taxes. California applies a 7.25% statewide base everywhere. Fresno County adds 0.725% in its own district taxes, and the City of Fresno adds a 0.375% parks tax on top. Together they reach the 8.35% combined rate.

A district tax is a local, voter-approved transactions and use tax added on top of the state base. Bradley-Burns is California’s uniform local sales tax law, and its 1.25% local portion has been fixed statewide since January 1, 2017, per CDTFA’s breakdown of the statewide base rate. The rows above sum exactly to 8.35%.

Fresno County vs Fresno City Sales Tax Rate: What Is the Difference?

They are not the same rate. Unincorporated Fresno County carries a lower combined rate than the City of Fresno, because the city stacks its own Measure P district tax on top of the countywide taxes. Neighboring Clovis is higher still. The rate is not consistent across Fresno County.

City of Fresno8.35%CDTFA city & county rate table (2026)

These figures come from CDTFA’s city and county rate schedule. The lesson: pin the rate to the exact jurisdiction of the sale, not to “Fresno County” as a whole.

How Do You Find the Fresno City Sales Tax Rate by ZIP Code?

Do not rely on ZIP code alone. Fresno ZIP codes (93650 and the 93701–93730 range) can straddle city limits and unincorporated county, and California taxes the destination address’s jurisdiction. CDTFA warns that a mailing address or ZIP code cannot reliably set the rate, which is why its know-your-rate lookup tools use street address or map coordinates instead.

E-commerce sellers who need automated lookups can use the CDTFA Tax Rate API, which returns the combined rate for a specific address or latitude/longitude and may return more than one result near a boundary. CDTFA also notes that rates and city/county boundary lines are subject to change.

When Do Fresno Sales Tax Rates Change?

California district taxes change only on quarterly operative dates: January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1. A new or increased district tax cannot take effect earlier than the first calendar quarter beginning more than 110 days after voters adopt it, under Revenue and Taxation Code Section 7265 per CDTFA’s district tax implementation guidance.

The effective rate is the combined rate applied at the point of sale for a given address. Fresno’s rate last moved with Measure P, the City of Fresno Clean and Safe Parks Transactions and Use Tax, which voters approved on November 6, 2018 with 52.17% support per Ballotpedia. After litigation, collection of the 0.375% tax did not begin until July 1, 2021. For any date, check CDTFA for the live rate rather than trusting a static page.

What Is Taxable in Fresno City, and What Is Exempt?

Tangible goods are taxable; most necessities and professional services are exempt. Electronics, clothing, and prewritten software on physical media carry the 8.35% rate. Groceries for home consumption, prescription medicines, and professional services are exempt. Over-the-counter supplements are taxable. The table below cites CDTFA for each category.

California’s tangible-transfer logic drives the digital rows: software or content delivered electronically with no physical media is generally not taxable, per CDTFA Publication 109.

Who Needs to Collect Sales Tax in Fresno City?

You must collect if you have nexus in California. Physical presence such as a store, warehouse, inventory, or employees creates nexus. So does economic nexus, which California sets at $500,000 in annual California sales, per CDTFA and Commenda’s California guide. Any seller meeting either test needs a CDTFA seller’s permit, which is free and issued online.

Out-of-state sellers over the threshold collect use tax at the same combined rate the buyer’s address carries. For the full picture, see Commenda’s US nexus exposure guide and the California sales tax rate page.

How Do You File Sales Tax Returns in Fresno City?

CDTFA assigns a monthly, quarterly, or annual filing frequency based on your sales volume. Returns are due the last day of the month after the reporting period; a January–March quarter is due April 30. You file and pay through CDTFA’s online services. Late filing triggers a 10% penalty plus interest, per CDTFA.

Accurate records make this routine. Track every sale, taxable or exempt, so your return reconciles to your books before you submit it through CDTFA’s online services portal.

What Other Taxes Apply in Fresno City?

Property tax is the main other tax, and it is separate from sales tax. Fresno County’s median effective property tax rate is 1.22%, above the 1.02% national median, per Ownwell’s April 2026 data. The median home value is $245,047 and the median annual bill is $2,963, about $563 above the $2,400 national median. In property tax, effective rate means tax paid divided by home value.

Business license fees are a separate municipal charge under Fresno’s city ordinance, not a sales or use tax, so they fall outside this page.

How Commenda Helps With Fresno Sales Tax Compliance

Fresno’s stacked rates and address-level rules make manual compliance error-prone. Commenda’s indirect tax software tracks your physical and economic nexus across states, calculates the correct rate by address down to city and county levels like Fresno’s, and handles your CDTFA filings. Use the sales tax calculator to look up rates, and the US nexus exposure guide to see where you have crossed a registration threshold. The calculator looks up rates; it does not check nexus exposure.
